Palestine: Where International Law Has Lost Much of Its Meaning

Palestinians are heroic, but in an armed conflict Israel has all the advantage. It is hard to see how Palestinians can win by this means. Of course, it’s not all armed conflict from the Palestinian side. A lot of it is unarmed, at least from the Palestinians, since they have few arms. But in that case they need vast numbers of unarmed participants, and there are not yet enough to paralyze the Israeli security.

The Palestinians can make the conflict last forever, but only at great cost. The Israelis will be increasingly brutal, and other countries have not shown the will to stop them.

Domestically, the Palestinian Authority will look impotent and useless. For Netanyahu it is another distraction from his corruption scandal, deferring it still further. Clearly the current crisis is the opposite of validation for the “normalization” initiative of Arab monarchies. It is ultimately a dead end for them, and the actions of the Israelis against the Palestinians only brings their diplomatic experiment closer to the finish.

Regarding the role and reason behind inciting this aggression by Israeli side, it is the only thing Netanyahu knows how to do. And there are many Israelis that love conflict with the Palestinians. They want to kill and expel as many Palestinians as fast as possible.

International organizations are not intended to empower the weak, and have rarely if ever done so. They are intended to allow the powerful to make more effective use of their power. Otherwise, the powerful would simply abandon international organizations and exercise their power outside them. That is, in effect, what the US and Israel are in fact doing. They have no respect for international law or treaties or agreements like the JCPOA. The US simply marched into Syria and stole its land and petroleum, not on the basis of international law, but in spite of it; similarly with Israeli violations of Lebanese airspace and air attacks against Syria. International law has lost much of its meaning.

There are a few positive signs in gradual changes of Middle Eastern equations, such the ability of the Iranian economy to diversify, the success of the Syrians in recapturing and defending the majority of their land, as well as Iraqi demonstrations of independence from the invaders of their homeland. But the destructive power of the imperialists is still too big a factor. In the end they will exhaust themselves, but that end is not yet near.
